Ariana Grande is the ultimate shapeshifter. After months of channeling her Wicked character, Glinda, in a predominately pink palette (the Good Witch’s signature color), she surprised Us all with the debut of a radical new wardrobe that could have been lifted from Elphaba’s closet.
Her makeunder was revealed at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation screening of Wicked on Thursday, December 4, in New York City. Grande, 31, wore minimal makeup, swept-back hair and a loose black frock. Designed by The Row, the LBD exuded the kind of quiet luxury that doesn’t exist in Oz.
The actress looked positively cozy in the relaxed silhouette, casually tucking her hands into the dress’ hidden pockets while posing for photographers. The fuzzy mohair finish added a layer of texture and whimsy, moving an otherwise pared-back design into far more luxurious territory.
Grande’s skirt fell to the floor, but high heels could be seen peeking out ever so slightly: She wore knife-sharp black pumps with a toe so pointy, it could rival that of Elphaba’s witchy hat. The Swarovski brand ambassador didn’t wear a stitch of jewelry, save for simple diamond studs.
With Wicked’s press tour largely in the rearview mirror, Grande appears to be getting back to her sartorial roots, which, lest you forget, revolved around mostly black, beige and gray. For years, her wardrobe aligned with her professional pursuits, whether matched to her album’s cover art or the bottle of her perfume, Cloud. Even her Instagram’s visual aesthetic followed suit.
While this was a marked departure from Glinda, it also felt like a supportive wink to her co-star Cynthia Erivo. After all, by the end of Wicked: Part 1, Glinda is on Team Elphaba. That makes Grande’s latest look a stylish homage to the storyline and right on brand, per usual.
Wicked is playing in theaters now.
