Ashwin’s Determination Post 2012 Defeat
India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opened up about the turning point early in his career. After India’s 2012 Test series defeat to England at home, Ashwin vowed to never allow another home series loss. This promise became a driving force in his career as he led India’s dominance
Speaking in a BCCI tribute video, Ashwin recalled the emotional moment that shaped his resolve. “Look, I don’t know where to begin, honestly, I think. I made myself a promise in 2012. We lost the series against England, a tricky one. It was very early in my career and I was just telling myself, we’re not going to lose another one ever, and that’s what I promised myself . How many wickets you take, how many hour runs you make, in 10 years’ time, you won’t remember them. It’s the memories that matters,” said Ashwin in a video released by the BCCI.
Ashwin Promise To Never Let India Lose Home Test Series
India, under his influence, went on to win a world-record 18 consecutive home Test series over the next 11 years. During this streak, Ashwin played a pivotal role, scalping 320 wickets in 53 home matches with remarkable consistency.
Ashwin concluded his illustrious Test career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker with 537 wickets in 106 matches. He has scored over 1,500 runs, including three centuries with his impressive batting.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin expressed gratitude. “But if somebody had told me in 2011 that I would be getting so many wickets, I’d be retiring in 2024 on December the 18th. I wouldn’t have believed them because I knew that this is a game that I loved, but I never did expect that I would get so much love and so many wickets and so many runs as well. I’m very glad, deep sense of gratitude for everyone that supported me, everyone that’s challenged me. So happy today. Thank you,” he added.
Notably, Ashwin won 11 Player of the Series awards, tying Muttiah Muralitharan’s record in Test cricket history. His match-winning performances cemented his status as one of India’s all-time great all-rounders.
