Former NFL tight end Kevin Ware Jr. pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend in 2021 and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Ware, 44, reached a plea deal with the prosecution during a court appearance on Wednesday, May 7, just days before jury selection was scheduled to begin in his murder trial.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Judge Brian Warren demanded a swift answer from Ware about the plea deal, warning it would expire and he could face life in prison.

Ware left the courtroom to “think about” the deal with his attorneys. He returned roughly 20 minutes later and accepted the plea.

Ware’s girlfriend, Taylor Pomanski, 29, went missing in April 2021 after last being seen at a party at her home. In July 2021, Ware was indicted for murder and tampering with evidence, specifically a corpse, in connection with Pomanski’s death.

Court documents alleged Ware “cut her with a knife, hit her with a blunt object, strangled her and then burned her corpse.”

Human remains found in Harris County, Texas in December 2021 were later identified as Pomanski’s in April 2022.

Shortly before Pomanski went missing, Ware was arrested on two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon. He was released on $23,000 bond just five days before Pomanski’s disappearance.

In June 2021, Ware was arrested for failing to report for bond supervision. He remained incarcerated until being charged with Pomanski’s death.

After his arrest, Pomanski’s loved ones were optimistic that Ware being in custody would lead to developments in the case.

“Kevin knows exactly what happened,” Eric Zuleger, a former boyfriend of Pomanski’s, told KPRC-TV Houston at the time.

Zuleger told KHOU 11 News that he was in touch with Pomanski in the final days of her life.
