Jofra Archer to make test comeback
English pacer Jofra Archer is close to make a test return after England Cricket Board’s central contract extension until October 2026.
This decision by England and Wales Cricket Board shows their faith in the pacer’s calibre for the red- ball format.
Archer has gone through an injury hiatus since February 2021. However his recent performance in white-ball cricket has reignited hope.
Ben Stokes, England’s captain has also expressed optimism about Archer’s test return.
“The excitement is understandable around Jofra,” Stokes said. “The best thing is he is back on the field playing. I am sure he might have thought he might not have the chance to put on an England shirt again and the injuries and surgeries he has gone through could have ended other people’s careers so there is no rushing back for anything for Jofra.
“He is being handled very well by the ECB and that will certainly continue. But Jof is a man of few words, even over WhatsApp. I had one a couple of months ago saying ‘Zimbabwe?’. That shows he is very interested in playing Test cricket for England.”
Archer’s Cricket Journey and Recent Performance
Archer has endured multiple injuries, including stress fracture, sidelining him from Tests for nearly three years.
However, his comeback in white-ball cricket has been promising. In 2024, he played only 20 white ball games. In T20 World Cup he took 10 wickets.
His consistency proved his worth to England’s Bowling attack. Evidently, ECB has carefully managed Archer’s workload.

His upcoming commitments, including IPL, may delay his red ball camelback, But the ECB’s plans are aligned with ensuring his readiness for Test cricket in 2025.
Upcoming Challenge
While Archer’s central contract signifies trust, challenges lie ahead. He has not played first-class cricket since May 2021, raising concerns about his ability to endure the rigors of Test cricket.
The ECB plans to gradually reintegrate him into the longer format by scheduling County Championship matches.
Archer’s participation in England’s series against India, starting in June 2025, remains uncertain.
Ben Stokes acknowledged the need for Archer to adapt to Test cricket demands through gradual preparation.
