Nitish Reddy’s debut heroics in Perth showcased his talent, silencing critics with a standout performance.

Nitish Reddy’s Stellar Debut Performance

India’s young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy delivered an exceptional debut in the first Test against Australia in Perth.

Initially questioned by Sunil Gavaskar for his inclusion, the 21-year-old proved his mettle with a resilient 41-run knock in the first innings.

His vital contribution helped India reach 150, setting the tone for a competitive game.

Despite initial struggles with the ball, Reddy remained unfazed and showcased his all-round skills.

In the second innings, Reddy displayed his adaptability, scoring a quickfire 38*, further solidifying India’s dominance.

He also claimed his maiden Test wicket by dismissing Mitchell Marsh, proving his worth in challenging conditions. His sharp fielding added to his impact, making him a key player in India’s 295-run victory.

Gavaskar’s Change of Heart

Sunil Gavaskar, who had questioned Reddy’s readiness for Test cricket, praised the youngster after his performance.

“These two hundreds were terrific, as was the 200-plus opening partnership, but the most impressive innings was from Nitish Reddy. He showed an awareness of what was required which belied the fact that he was making his Test debut,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

“Even in the first innings, he displayed a refreshing grasp of scoring opportunities and ended up as the top scorer. His bowling too came in handy, and his fielding was outstanding. Here is a man for the future,” he added.

On Day 1 of the Perth Test between India and Australia, Sunil Gavaskar criticized the decision to exclude Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja from the playing XI. He also questioned the inclusion of Nitish Reddy in the team.

“This is a new management, new thinking. They have gone with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is a promising cricketer, make no mistake about that. But is he ready for Test cricket?” Gavaskar had asked while doing commentary.

Highlighting Reddy’s awareness and ability to adapt, Gavaskar termed his innings the most impressive of the match.

The former captain acknowledged Reddy’s contributions, stating his batting, bowling, and fielding displayed maturity beyond his years.

Gavaskar’s endorsement marked a significant moment, as he lauded Reddy as a “player for the future.”
