Part Two, Wicked, and The Substance Pick Up Wins In a Quiet Genre Night at the Oscars

After going into the 2025 Oscars with a promising array of nominations between them–including Best Picture–DuneWicked, and The Substance rounded out the awards ceremony last night with wins across an array of behind-the-scenes categories.

Sean Baker’s Anora was the big hit of the night, taking home 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress (for Mikey Madison), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing, giving Baker himself a record-breaking haul for most wins by a single person in one night, matching Walt Disney’s four-statue haul in 1954. Baker, however, became the first to do so for a single film.

While Dune: Part TwoWicked, and The Substance all missed out on wins in the acting categories, each film found success in array of technical awards. Dune took home two wins in Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, while Wicked took Best Production Design and made history with Paul Tazewell’s win in Best Costume Design, making him the first Black man to win the category in Academy history. The Substance rounded out the night for genre media with a win for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
