Rebecca Gayheart shared a poignant reminder about what matters in life as her husband, fellow actor Eric Dane, battles ALS.
“Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments,” a quote attributed to Rose Kennedy read, which Gayheart, 53, reposted onto her Instagram Stories on Saturday, April 12.
Gayheart and Dane, 52, have been navigating a challenging time after he was recently diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a neurodegenerative disease that often leads to muscle weakness and paralysis. ALS is also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the Grey’s Anatomy alum told People in a Thursday, April 10, statement. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Dane and Gayheart share daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. While Dane has not shared further updates about his diagnosis, he plans to continue his acting career.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” Dane added on Thursday, referring to his role of Cal Jacobs on the acclaimed HBO drama. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Hours later, Gayheart subtly addressed Dane’s diagnosis when she shared an anonymous quote about “the real luxuries in life.”
A list read, “Time, health, a quiet mind, slow mornings, ability to travel, rest without guilt, a good night’s sleep, calm and ‘boring’ days, meaningful conversations, home-cooked meals, people you love, people who love you back.”
Dane and Gayheart got married in 2004 but separated 14 years later in 2018 when the Jawbreaker actress filed for divorce. Gayheart ultimately filed to dismiss her petition earlier this month.
“We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great coparents,” she told E! News on Wednesday, April 9. “We really figured out the formula to staying a family and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it and we are as well.”
Regardless of their seven-year separation, Gayheart still sees her journey with Dane as “a successful relationship.”
“I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success,” Gayheart added to E! News. “We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years and we had two beautiful kids so I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”
