Today at Disney’s CinemaCon presentation the Mouse House unleashed Marvel Studios misfit mayhem with a new look at Thunderbolts*. The team-up film hits theaters May 2, and we already know who among the cast will be back for Avengers: Doomsday in May 2026.
Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” is playing on the radio as Red Guardian and Bucky sit in the front seat of a white truck. They discuss the origins of their supersuits, with Guardian’s revealed to be a Russian imitation of Bucky’s authentic Hydra suit. “We’re the same. Different, but same,” Guardian says. The banter continues until you hear “Are we there yet?” from the cabin of the truck.
In the cabin of the truck, out of sight, are Yelena, Ghost, and Walker. They’re also discussing suit stuff and Yelena asks Walker if he likes his hat. Walker says he calls it a helmet but, if she wants to call it a hat, that’s fine. “Okay, do you like the hat?” She asks. He does.
“What’s the plan?” they ask. Bucky crashes the truck into the ground floor of a building, and all of the characters pour out. “I like this plan,” Guardian says. A big brawl ensues with each hero fighting in their signature style. Soon, though a voice booms over the speakers. “I just put that drywall in,” Valentina says. “I left the door open, come on up.”
They get in the elevator, which opens at the top of Avengers Tower. Valentina talks about how crazy it is all the fights that took place in this specific place, referring several previous MCU movies simultaneously, when Walker tells Valentina it’s over. They’re there to take her in. “I don’t think so,” Valentina says before starting to make fun of each character. She tells Yelena she looks awful, says she doesn’t know who the Red Guardian is, as well as a few other shots. She says planned to have them all killed, but then made nice and tried to form a team. “You are so adorable.” They make a move they’re stopped in midair before they can grab her. “I’m not alone,” she says. A quick shot of a person floating in the air among helicopters suggests Sentry is helping her. “None of us fly,” Yelena says.
We see them all tied up, presumably after the previous scene, and Red Guardian suggests they let out a scream, “For the glory.” They do it. After a scene of Yelena jumping off a building, we hear them discuss that the Avengers are gone and no one is coming. But then they realize, they could be the ones who are coming.
“Not super, not heroes, not giving up,” the tagline says as Guardian tells everyone they have to do something about what’s happening or live with it. “Beautiful, Dr. Phil.”
Thunderbolts* stars Florence Pugh as Yelena, the new Black Widow; David Harbour as Red Guardian; Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier; Wyatt Russell as US Agent; Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster; Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost; Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine; and Lewis Pullman as Sentry.
